So You Think You Can Watch As Much TV As Lindork?

August 29 2009.

I want to eventually end up in the entertainment media/journalism industry.

You know this by now.

As such, one could safely guess that I like(love) entertainment. ;)

Thus today’s post is my listing of all the television shows I’ll be tuning into this Fall, both returning favourites as well as new shows that have caught my attention, along with their premiere dates and my thoughts on each show!

September 8: 90210 (The CW)
September 9: GLEE (Fox)
September 9: So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
September 10: The Vampire Diaries (The CW)
September 10: Supernatural (The CW)
September 14: Gossip Girl (The CW)
September 14: One Tree Hill (The CW)
September 21: How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
September 21: Heroes (NBC)
September 21: Castle (ABC)
September 25: Dollhouse (Fox)
September 25: Smallville (The CW)
September 29: The Hills (MTV)

2010: LOST !!!!

Notes about these shows:

  • 90210 – guilty pleasure really, it’s not that incredible a television series, but pretty cast (good guy eye candy), cute clothes and hairstyles, set in Southern California, where I’d eventually like to live and work, and the drama that we all love in our TV shows brings me back. I could do without Shenae Grimes though, I personally way preferred her on Degrassi than on 90210. She can’t act..

  • GLEE – i am beyond words excited for this show! The pilot was so much fun! It was smart, funny, totally entertaining and produced such a great cover of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ ! Plus rumors are circulating that SYTYCD Season 5 winner Jeanine Mason (who has publicly said multiple times that she’s interested in acting), may join the Glee cast!! Excitement.

  • So You Think You Can Dance (Season 6) – Ha ha! Do I really need to say anything about my love for this show? If you don’t know how I feel about this show and the dancers and dance, this must be your first time to my blog. Admittedly I am kind of SYTYCD-drained out at this point and I worry that Season 6 being back-to-back with Season 5 will turn people off from it (myself included), there’s no way I’m not watching the show this season. Just no way. I hope to blog my thoughts and recap this season like I did last season, but whether or not it’s anymore of a regularly scheduled blogging than the last was, I can’t say given the amount of television shows I’m taking on to watch this Fall, as well as my school and other-life schedule!

  • The Vampire Diaries – I know nothing about this show except that there are vampires in it and it’s based on a popular book series that I really want to read but haven’t gotten to yet. Well, I also know that the lead girl was a character in Degrassi (woo hoo for The CW taking in Canadians!) and that the two main vampires who appear in all the ads with her are gorgeous and have had roles in shows I’ve watched before. Anyway, this looks promising.

  • Supernatural – I know that Supernatural is a great show and I love Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles but I have never actually sat down and watched the show for whatever reason. I’ve seen two episodes in total, I think. If it is humanly possible, however, I may try and catch up on all the seasons of it before the premiere date, and then finally tune in regularly to watch this season!

  • Gossip Girl – Totally stoked for this to come back. Chuck and Blair are one of my favourite currently-on-TV couples right now and I am just bouncing in my seat anticipating their adorable scenes together (that will eventually lead to heartbreaking scenes because alas, there’s no way they’re going to be able to stay together… otherwise there’d be less drama and as written way above, we all love the drama). But I’m just as excited for those heartbreaking scenes that are to come! I’m iffy about Hilary Duff being on the show this season but we’ll see how it goes.

  • One Tree Hill – Ah. This show used to be sooo good. Key word in that sentence: Used to. Sigh. I was ready for the show to wrap up last season (because I am a firm believer in ending something before everyone begins to hate it!) but here it is, back again. Regulars Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton aren’t involved in this season and while some are distraught over that, I’m quite pleased. They were the least interesting characters with the least interesting plot last season, in my opinion, and Chad’s character had steadily been dropping on my favourite characters of the show meter since he continually professed his love for multiple women throughout the course of the series. He’s an I-Love-You Slut, basically, quoting Robin from HIMYM. Ha. I love Nathan and Haley but their grown-up stories are just not as interesting as their high school ones and honestly at this point I’m excited for the returning OTH season for this reason and this reason alone: Brooke & Julian are together. I was always Team Brooke, by the way. ;)

  • How I Met Your Mother – SQUEE!! Words cannot describe how excited I am for the return of HIMYM. Only exclamation marks and jumping up and down can truly show it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (picture me jumping up and down excitedly) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This show brings me all kinds of joy and happiness. I love the entire cast and each character they play. I also read in this recent Neil Patrick Harris interview, that him, Jason Segel, and Josh Radnor were doing a Playboy photoshoot with a goat for the launch of the new HIMYM season and I just died laughing. I love them! Bwahaha. I am so excited for this show to return!!!

  • Heroes – Okay, I know a lot of people have complaints about Heroes. Like, that it sucks. The writing is terrible. Etc. (I’m looking at you Ramin) But I don’t care! Superpowers and shows that feature people with superpowers have always been one of my weaknesses and no matter how terrible the writing may be (which it really isn’t all that bad anyway, I actually thought the dialogue and actor delivery for last season’s finale was fantastic!!!), I will still watch because it is entertaining and fun and it fascinates me seeing people fly and heal themselves and time travel and hurl Dragonball Z-like balls of power at one another. So yes. I am excited for the return of Heroes and if you’ve got something bad to say about it, just don’t! :)

  • Castle - Nathan Fillion is fantastic (and Canadian! and not only is he Canadian, he is Edmontonian! Damn that’s awesome). Castle was a really pleasant surprise this past year. Though it seemed to randomly stop in the middle of its season (or maybe it had only gotten the OK for a few episodes? either way it didn’t feel like it was a full seasom…) I’m super happy that it’s back and that it wasn’t axed. This is a really well-written, well-acted show that I think is my outlet for crime-like television, since I’ve never really gotten hooked to CSI or Law & Order or whatever popular other crime-detective-like shows there are out there.

  • Dollhouse – The fact that this show is even returning when everyone thought it was going to get the axe (not because it wasn’t good or anything, but because good shows being prematurely axed by Fox is something that happens, sadly *cough* Firefly *cough* Terminator *cough* Veronica Mars… Okay well Veronica Mars wasn’t with Fox anyway but I am still bitter that it got cancelled because MAN, THAT SHOW WAS GREAT), is a cause for celebration. I loved this show when it premiered last year. I totally love Eliza Dushku as an ass-kicking babe and get this, another favourite, ass-kicking babe, Summer Glau, is joining the show this season!!! Happiness!!! This slightly lessens the blow I still feel when I think about Fox canceling Terminator. UGH TERMINATOR WAS SUCH A GOOD SHOW! Anyway. If everyone from Terminator happened to guest star on Dollhouse this season, I wouldn’t mind that either. :)

  • Smallville – I used to watch Smallville religiously before Lana got so irritating that I couldn’t stand to watch it anymore, thus missing the last two seasons. I hear however, that she is out of the picture now (at last! finally), so this new season premiering Sept. 25 may be the one that makes me resume my love for the show. Yay! I hope they start kicking up the Lois & Clark relationship up a notch. Also, I really think Justin Hartley (Oliver Queen a.k.a The Green Arrow) is delicious eye candy.

  • The Hills – Haha okay maybe this is my guilty pleasure, not 90210. Yes I understand that this show is totally scripted and fake and not “reality” in the slightest. Yes I understand that the show is just mindless dramatics that make really unimportant issues in fairly unimportant people’s lives, important. Yes I know this is the show that unleashed Speidi on the world, God help us all. But… I love watching it. I love the drama (no matter how fake it is, lol). I love the pretty people! I love the music. And here’s something that I really do legitimately love about watching the show… I love that 50% of it is cuts of Los Angeles / Southern California scenery, outsides of restaurants, buildings and highways. This show really just adds to my yearning to live in La La land.

  • LOST – Okay, LOST isn’t actually coming back until 2010 but I couldn’t have a television shows that I’m excited about blog post without mentioning LOST! That would be wrong. I am so excited for the final season of LOST. Each episode of this show blows my mind. Seriously. I think that my mind cannot be blown any further but then the next episode arrives and there goes my mind, blown yet again. And while I’m saddened that there won’t be anymore LOST after this season, this is the perfect example of what I was talking about in the One Tree Hill blurb – LOST is going to end before there’s any chance for people to get annoyed with it or think that it’s dragging on far too long, or before it gets to the point where it’s just not good anymore. Nope. LOST is going to end with such a brilliant bang and I am so excited!!!

The end!

Honestly when I was thinking about making this blog post while I was at work today, I was just thinking I’d list the shows and their premiere dates but as you can see, it turned into this. Ha ha.

So, which of these shows do you also watch? Do you agree with what any of the negative things I’ve written about any of the shows? Are you just as excited as I am?? What show that’s not on this list are you eagerly awaiting the return/premiere of?!

Honestly I don’t know how I’ll be able to watch all of these shows + school + run websites and blogs and etcetera but, I always seem to make it work. ;)

I am going to get the following..

So my last ‘I-want-to-buy-the-following’ list was back at the end of April: This Blog Entry. I ended up getting two out of the three things listed in that blog entry (except the FlipVideo I ended up getting was not customized with ‘LINDORK’ on it, sadly).

Now I’m back with another wishlist/want-list that hopefully I can fulfill within the next month or so.

1. Manfrotto 314B Background Kit + Sheet

What: A background screen stand for photography purposes!
Some Specs: Includes one 3 section Telescopic Pole Art. 272, lenght 112cm to 298cm, a Compact Stand Art, two Mini Spring Clamp Art and one Transporting Kit Bag. Designed to support rolls or sheets of background paper or any other background material.
Why I want this: I want to take my little photography hobby up one notch and I have wanted to have my own little backdrop area in my house for a long time but there had never been any room for it. This past summer we cleaned up a portion of our house that I think would make a great location for a background stand + sheets! The background sheets themselves aren’t too bad, I think they were about $30 last time I checked? But it’s the dratted stand that is going to cost me a lot… I just think once I get it, more photographic opportunities (as well as learning opportunities) are going to open for me and it’ll be a lot of fun!
Cost: $259.95 CAD, but I am going to see if my former photography teacher can get me a 10% discount through his company.
Website: www.vistek.ca

2. Panasonic IC Digital Voice Recorder

What: Panasonic IC Digital Voice Recorder
Specs: A built-in 3X zoom microphone targets a single voice while surround sounds are suppressed. The Voice Activated System recording begins as soon as sound is detected, which helps eliminate wasted tape space. And with a convenient USB Terminal, you can connect to your PC to save files.
Why I want this: I need an upgrade from the current voice recorder I have, which is about three years old now and I lost the original software CD, so I have to do about five extra steps to get any recordings onto my laptop, which is a big hassle! So I just chose this as my upgrade.
Cost: $129.99 CAD
Website: www.bestbuy.ca

And that’s it for now! I hope to get both of these before September is over. I thought this list was going to be a lot longer than it ended up being but I suppose it’s good that it’s not longer because I don’t think I’d have been able to afford it if it was! :D

Lindork’s Top 4 So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Dancers!

June 4 2009.

Here’s a summary of four dancers in this year’s Top 20 who I think deserve the the public’s support and who will likely (I hope) make it far in the competition.

1. Kuponohi’ipoi Aweau (KUPONO)

Name: Kuponohi’ipoi Aweau
(pronounced: Kupono-hee-E-poi Avay-ow or “Kupono”)
Style: Contemporary/Lyrical
Age: 23
Audition City: Seattle
Hometown: Hawaii, HI

Bio: 23-year-old Pono Aweau started dancing in the 5th grade and has been doing it ever since. He has been a part of Hawaii’s popular 24-7 Dance Force as both student and dance instructor, and was also a dancer, dance captain, and in charge of wardrobe with the Norwegian Cruise Line in 2005. Along with dance, Pono does costume design, set design, decor and interior design. Auditioning in Seattle, Pono was praised for his strong movements, look, and quirkiness. During Vegas Week, Pono excelled in all style challenges, group challenges, and solos. (Note, this) article says Kupono started dancing at grade 5, but the Fox Blog bio here says at the age of 16).

Personal Opinion: Pono is a very interesting dancer with an extremely interesting “look.” He’s got this quality about him that is hard to ignore, especially when watching him dance. His moves are clean, he hits it hard, but at the same time has a very soft and fluid motion with his movements. I think he can really go far in this competition. I love his style of contemporary, I love his hip hop, I love his “quirkiness”, and he’s also got one other thing going for him that is both advantageous and a disadvantage and that is his connection to S4’s Mark Kanemura. Plus side – it’s pretty much a guarantee that all Mark fans are going to latch onto and support/vote for Pono, thus taking him far in the competition. Down side to that – it may be that he’s only “loved” or appreciated (at least at first) JUST because of his Mark connection. This could (and already has actually) lead into unfair Mark/Pono comparisons and Pono sort of dancing in Mark’s ’shadow’ to speak. Fans need to see that while there are smiliarities & while Mark & Pono are great friends and have danced together before, they’re two completely different people with two different styles. Pono should be given the opportunity to show America who he is and what he can do and fans should vote for him for him, not how much he may remind you of your Season 4 SYTYCD favourite.

That said, I love Pono. I think he’s got the technique, style, versatility, and personality to take him to the top. Emphasis on PERSONALITY! I love his personality!!! (The LISTS? Way cute. And I do that too. Lists for everything). I’m throwing my absolute support behind him and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the So You Think You Can Dance stage! :)

Go Pono!

Audition Clip:

Miss Hawaii USA Step Down Performance:

Pono did the above December 2008 performance’s wardrobe, concept, and set design. He’s also in it, the one with the black hat. Seen most clearly opposite Mark Kanemura at about 1:44 until the end of the video. :-)

2. Phillip Chbeeb

Name: Philip Chbeeb
(also known as “PacMan”)
Style: Hip Hop/Popping
Age: 20
Audition City: Los Angeles
Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Bio: Phillip “Pac Man” Chbeeb is a 20-year-old hip hop dancer and choreographer from Houston, Texas. Phillip pops, locks, break dances, and does underground and commercial hip hop. He first auditioned for SYTYCD back in 2007 (Season 3) and made it to Vegas. He auditioned again in 2008 (Season 4), and was also given a ticket to Vegas, but was unable to attend due to personal illness. The judges have praised him for having one of the “sickest” and unique hip hop, popping styles they’ve ever seen & that no one does what he does better than him. Last year Phillip hip hop “pop” battled Robert Muraine on the SYTYCD stage.

Personal Opinion: Phillip is incredible. He does things with his body that I’ve never seen before. He’s fantastic in his own style and he’s proved more than exceptional in other styles. After failing to make Top 20 for Season 3 and 4, I think this is the year for Phillip. He absolutely deserves to be on the show and he absolutely deserves to make it far in the competition. He’s shown so much growth since his first audition and his personality is so likeable. I think he’s got a great odds in making Top 4 this season. When he dances it’s hard to tear your eyes away and the fact that he’s auditioned twice before means he’s already got a well-established fanbase that’s only going to grow as the season progresses.

3. Evan Kasprzak

Name: Evan Kasprzak
Style: Broadway/Jazz
Age: 21
Audition City: Memphis
Hometown: West Bloomfield, MI

Bio: Evan is a triple threat. He excels in dancing, acting, and singing. He first auditioned during Season 4 and made it through to the Vegas but didn’t make the Top 20 cut. He also starred in “After Hours“, a homage to dance sequences during the golden age of Hollywood musicals and has done many pieces choreographed by brother Ryan.

Personal Opinion: I think Evan is so good. His audition was so relaxed and gave me the same feeling I get when I watch Travis & Donyelle’s ‘Georgia on my Mind‘ performance (S2 <3) He seems versatile, he’s personable – his personality is fantastic! As well, his relationship with his brother is so incredible and it was absolutely heartbreaking that it had to be between him and Ryan. At this point I’m not sure how far Evan can go in the competition and I’m not sure how versatile he will actually be but I thought he was fantastic during the contemporary round of Vegas, which definitely showed his versatility, and I hope that continues throughout the season.

4. Brandon Bryant.

Name: Brandon Bryant
Style: Contemporary
Age: 19
Audition City: Denver
Hometown: Miami, Florida

Bio: 19-year-old Brandon Bryant first auditioned for Season 4. Judges loved him and he was sent to Vegas where he made it to the very last stage, vying for the final Top 20 S4 spot with Gev Manoukian. This year his audition brought Mary to tears.

Personal Opinion: Brandon is a very strong dancer. He’s powerful, he’s technically sound, there is absolutely no doubt that he is good. His personality just may not translate as well to audiences. I think Brandon can go very far in this competition though and I hope that he does. He may fall into what last year’s Will Wingfield fell into however, very strong dances and very good performances, but an early exit. And for whatever reason, Mia seems to hate Brandon which isn’t going to help him but I thought he handled Mia’s comments very well, very smartly. I like his smile FYI.

Notable S5 Mentions:

  • Tony Bellissimo
  • Jason Glover
  • Jonathan Platero

Incredible dancers I will be supporting in future SYTYCD seasons:

Nathan Trasoras and Alex Wong for SYTYCD Season 6 (and/or) 7!

Conclusions:

I really don’t care about any of these girls at this point. This could be an issue as the girls are going to end up paired with either of these 4 favourite guys of mine. Also, Mia’s personal attack on Brandon was uncalled for and really unjustified. My early favourites are all of the male persuasion, as they are each season, but this year my disinterest in the girls is the most its ever been. I was devastated about Alex Wong. Absolutely. As well, I thought the actual episode tonight was pretty boring. Highlight – Pono’s lists. Heh.

Random information – SYTYCD performance shows used to tape on Monday’s, this year they appear to be taped on Tuesdays. (Probably due to Season 6 prepping coordination).

And here’s a list of the entire Top 20 So You Think You Can Dance Season 5:

1. Kuponohi’poi (Kupono) Aweau
2. Phillip Chbeeb
3. Evan Kasprzak
4. Brandon Bryant
5. Vitolio Jeune
6. Jonathan Platero
7. Tony Bellissimo
8. Maksim Kapitannikov
9. Ade Obayomi
10. Jason Glover
11. Janette Manrara
12. Kayla Radomski
13. Paris Torres
14. Jeanine Mason
15. Caitlin Kinney
16. Melissa Sandvig
17. Ashley Valerio
18. Randi Strong-Evans
19. Asuka Kondoh
20. Karla Garcia

So how about you? Are you liking the Top 20? Who are your early favourites? Who would you like to see paired up? Are you just as clueless about the girls as I am?!

Must-watch Summer movies! Here’s my list, what’s on yours?

April 26 2009.

Hey everyone!

So… I love movies. And, I watch the most movies during the summertime because, well, more free time = more movies I’m able to fit into my weekly schedule! Today I was reading the Edmonton Sun’s Sunday entertainment pullout and it had a four-page preview of summer movies!! I took a look through them all and selected the ones that piqued my interest, did a little bit more online research about the movies myself, and have come up with the following list:

(Yes this list starts with movies with April release dates because these ones came out this month and I still want/need to watch them!)

Release Date: April 17 2009

Movie: State of Play.
Starring: Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
A thinky thriller involving an old-school styled Washington journalist trying to solve a murder entangled in political connections.
Why I want to see it: I love movies about journalists and journalism! Also, the cast alone guarantees a great film. Plus, you gotta love those thinky movies.
Official Site: www.stateofplaymovie.net | Trailer: State of Play Trailer

Movie: 17 Again.
Starring: Zac Efron, Matthew Perry.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
A man gets to be 17 again. In the form of Zac Efron. There’s dancing and life lessons and starting over and all that fun stuff.
Why I want to see it: I love Chandler. I love cutesy comedy movies like this. I loved Freaky Friday so the whole body switching thing is always a good topic for me, lol. Also, Zac Efron is pretty…
Official Site: www.17againmovie.com | Trailer: 17 Again Trailer

Release Date: April 24 2009

Movie: The Soloist.
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
The story of how an LA Times columnist met a musician with schizophrenia, the friendship that grew & how music helped them both. TRUE STORY!
Why I want to see it: Because I loved the book. Because it’s based on two very real people and very real situations. Because Robert Downey Jr. is the man. And like State of Play, because I love movies about journalists and journalism!
Official Site: www.soloistmovie.com | Trailer: The Soloist Trailer

Release Date: May 1 2009

Movie: X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Taylor Kitsch, Ryan Reynolds.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
The story of how Wolverine came to be, his revenge on the man (Sabertooth) who killed his girlfriend, and other superhuman stuff.
Why I want to see it: I am a movies-based-on-comic-books nut. I love them! And I love movies where people have powers. Plus, I loved all of the X-Men movies and I loved Wolverine in them, so watching this is just a natural action. Plus Hugh Jackman is talented and yummy.
www.x-menorigins.com | Trailer: X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer

Release Date: May 8 2009

Movie: Star Trek.
Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
The early days of Kirk and his crew. Kirk deciding his life route and what not. *does Star Trek hand symbol*
Why I want to see it: I’m a dork, remember? But also, finding out that Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg would be in the Star Trek remake months ago instantly made me add this to the list of Must Watch as they exude awesome. Plus the trailer movie looks epic and awesome.
Official Site: www.startrekmovie.com | Trailer: Star Trek Trailer

Release Date: May 15 2009

Movie: Angels & Demons.
Starring: Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
A mystery thriller based on the popular book about a symbologist’s unraveling of an ancient society called the Illuminati and their secrets.
Why I want to see it: The book was amazing. I loved the Angels & Demons book way more than I loved The Da Vinci Code book (even though I did love that book. Movie, not so much). Tom Hank’s hair is horrifying to look at, but I like seeing my books translated on screen so I can’t miss this.
Official Site: www.angelsanddemons.com | Trailer: Angels & Demons Trailer

Release Date: May 21 2009

Movie: Terminator Salvation
Starring: Christian Bale.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
Set in 2018, John Connor is leading the resistance against Skynet when he discovers the secret behind the potential extermination of humans.
Why I want to see it: I love action movies. I loved the couple of episodes I watched of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. (I really should watch that entire show as I hear it is really, really amazing). But mostly my brother is in love with the Terminator story so its rubbed off on me as well. It really is fascinating and this should be a great movie. Plus I was never really a fan of Arnold in the other Terminators so I think Bale being the star of this one is a great change!
Official Site: www.terminatorsalvation.warnerbros.com | Trailer: Terminator Salvation Trailer

Release Date: May 22 2009

Movie: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Starring: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
Museum models Jedediah and Octavius are accidentally shipped to the Smithsonian Institute so security guard Stiller breaks in to rescue them.
Why I want to see it: I thought the first Night at the Museum was GREAT! A pleasant, funny surprise. Sequels tend to suck though, so hopefully this one doesn’t.

Release Date: June 24 2009

Movie: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
The Decepticons return to exact revenge upon Sam Witwicky and Optimus Prime, given the beatdown they got in the first movie.
Why I want to see it: Because the first one was freaking awesome. And as I said, I like action movies. I also love Shia LaBeouf (and to this day still can’t pronounce his last name or spell it properly on first try). But yeah, perhaps this word is overused but I feel this movie will be epic. Or can be epic.

Release Date: July 1 2009

Movie: Public Enemies.
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
Depp plays a notorious bankrobber during the the crime wave of the ’30s. Bale is part of FBI trying to take Depp and his gangsters down.
Why I want to see it: JOHNNY DEPP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Being badass and fabulous. Should be enough said.

What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
Harry and Dumbledore go on a dark and dangerous journey to try and ensure He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is weakened enough to be defeated.
Why I want to see it: Um. Because the Harry Potter book series is easily one my most favourite and the most amazing set of books that have ever been bestowed upon the world. Granted, the movies are always a thousand notches less unimpressive than the books but as I wrote way above, I LOVE seeing my books translated on the big screen and seeing HP on screen is like Christmas. I hope Luna Lovegood has a lot of scenes because the girl who plays her does such a brilliant job!

After being dumped by his girlfriend Summer, Tom, a hopeless romantic, reflects on his 500 days with her to see what went wrong.
Why I want to see it: HOW CUTE DOES THIS MOVIE LOOK? [go watch the trailer]. Now every single movie listed so far I knew about it before reading the Sun’s summer movie preview section, except THIS! My eyes would have just skimmed right over it if it hadn’t been for “Joseph Gordon-Levitt.” I love him! And here he is playing what I love about him most — an adorable dork. Anyway this will be REALLY cute. Fact.

Movie: When in Rome
Starring: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Jon Heder
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
Unlucky-in-love Beth flies to Rome for her sister’s wedding, steals some coins from a fountain of love, & gets chased by unimpressive men.
Why I want to see it: For the single fact alone… I am a HUGE fan of Kristin Bell. Ever since Veronica Mars I’ve been following her work. She’s a GREAT actress (even if some of her flick choices don’t really showcase her talents). If I had just read the synopsis for this alone without the knowledge that she was starring in it, I probably would have skipped right on over it but since she’s in it, I must support and see it!

Release Date: August 14 2009

Movie: The Time Traveler’s Wife
Starring: Rachel McAdams, Eric Bana.
What it’s about in 140 chars. or less (like a tweet :D ):
A love story about a man who has a genetic disorder causing him to travel through time unexpectedly, and his wife who must deal with it.
Why I want to see it: Damn. If I had read the book for this then I could have written the ’seeing my book translated onto the big screen’ reasoning but as I haven’t read this book yet (though I will for sure before it comes out), I can’t use that. BUT. I am SO in love with movies involving time travel!!! And I love Rachel McAdams and I think this will be a really cute movie and one of those book-to-movie ones that actually work.
Official Site: N/A. Check IMDB Profile instead | Fan-made Trailer because real trailer doesn’t exist yet?: The Time Traveler’s Wife Fan-Made Trailer

Other Movies I’ll Likely Watch:

  • Up! ( Trailer ) May 29 2009.
Will be visually awesome and cute and colourful.
  • Year One ( Trailer ) June 19 2009.
Michael Cera is adorable and this should get some chuckles out of me.
  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ( Trailer ) July 1 2009.
Ice Age films are always fun to watch.
  • G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra ( Trailer ) August 7 2009.
Yum, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, need I say more? Plus action and what not.
  • Inglorious Basterds ( Trailer ) August 21 2009.
I tend to radiate towards movies about Nazi-era Germany.

I was also TOTALLY disappointed that 2012, originally set to release this summer, has been pushed to November. Lame.

Anyway there are the movies that I’m excited to watch this summer!

I also plan on re-watching old favourite movies, and old movies that I’ve still yet to see as well!

So what about you? What movie(s) are you most excited to see this summer?

Also, side note: Imagine how awesome it would be to be paid to look up movies and movie trailers to put together a summer preview list! It would be AWESOME!! Kevin Williamson from the Sun definitely has a sweet job. He also got to interview Steve Lopez (author of The Soloist) last week when he wrote about The Soloist movie!! Suhweet.

I’m way too poor to want what I want, but I do! I do want these!

April 22 2009.

Hello all :) As I wrote in my last post, I’m spending the next few months trying to save up money to pay for a bunch of things I want/need.

Here are 3 gadgets on that list that will add to my video blogging and photography arsenal, in more detail:

1. Flip MinoHD (customized for my pink-loving dorkiness ;) )

Flip MinoHD: The Worlds Smallest HD Camcorder (CUSTOMIZED!)

Flip MinoHD: The World's Smallest HD Camcorder (CUSTOMIZED!)

What: The world’s smallest HD camcorder
Some Specs: Weighs only 3.3 ounces, convenient flip-out USB arm plugs directly into your computer, records high-quality H.264 videos that work with iTunes, iMovie, and iPhoto, silent mode for recording in sensitive situations, more specs @ official website.
Why I want this: I’ve wanted the Flip Video before the “MinoHD” version was even developed. Now this HD one, well… It’s portable. It’s convenient. It’s high quality. It’s customizable and it’s therefore adorable. And it uploads quick and easy to a computer. It’s perfect for video blogging, capturing random but awesome shots, and amateur film making, and this is why I want it!
Cost: $229.99 USD.
I say USD because the customizable option is only available for ordering online and shipping to the United States. Therefore I plan on getting it shipped to my cousin and having him bringing it over to me when he comes to Edmonton for my brother’s wedding in July! :D
Official Website: www.theflip.com/store/MinoHD

2. Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash

Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash

Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash

What: A flash to attach to my Canon EOS Rebel XTi
Some Specs: Superior build quality, including a metal foot for added strength, virtually silent flash recycle, Full swivel, 180° in either direction, zoom flash head covers range of 24-105mm; maximum guide number 141 ft./43m at ISO 100, more specs @ official website.
Why I want this: I need a flash. The built-in flash on my Canon XTi is really bad and does ridiculous crazy blippy flash things during its recycle time. My friend and I have determined that we think all XTi built-in flashes do that because she has the Canon XSi which is one-up from the XTi and her built-in flash is fine and does not do weird blippy things. Anyway, I basically fear taking photographs in darkly or dimly lit areas with my DSLR because I don’t use flash (because of said blippy thingy) and I’d like to. Therefore, I need a flash! And this one will be fairly cheap!
Cost: Regular (new) cost is $369 but I’m buying a used version from my photojournalist teacher for $225!
Official Website: www.mcbaincamera.com

3. Canon EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye Lens

Canon EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye Lens

Canon EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye Lens

What: A fisheye lens for my Canon EOS Rebel XTi
Some Specs: 180° Diagonal Angle of View, Rear Gel Holder (accepts up to 3 pre-cut gel filters), short minimum focusing distance of 8 in. (20 cm) gives new meaning to close-up shots, more specs @ official website.
Why I want this: Ever since I saw super wide-angle pictures posted by James Hill (a Best Job in the World candidate), I have fallen in love with the fisheye lens. I am so attracted to the effect that the fisheye lens has on images. Visually fantastic. Examples: 1 | 2 | 3 (All credit: James Hill) I knew that he had been using a fisheye lens, but I didn’t know the exact lens name and well, to be honest I didn’t try too hard to search for it. But then a few days ago on Jame’s blog, he wrote a post about the equipment he’s been using ( here ) and since then I’ve added this very expensive fisheye lens to my list of things to save up for! I want it hopefully before my trip to Los Angeles at the end of July.
Cost: Regular (new) cost is $949 but if I buy it through my photojournalist teacher he’ll get a discount!
Official Website: www.mcbaincamera.com

So there you go! (:

It is a shame because I’m way too poor to want what I want, but I do… I really do want these and I think they’ll all be quite an asset for me in terms of my filming and photography interests! :)

Time to take my life and go.

April 18 2009.

Hey everyone!

Okay so I’ve finally got around to writing this… ‘what’s next?’ blog.

WARNING: It’s definitely long. lol

If you prefer skim-reading, you can just skip to the end of this post and I’ll have a to-the-point bulleted list of my plans in bold. If you want to know what I cover in this blog, this is what I cover:

  • Los Angeles
  • Internships? Working?
  • Teaching English overseas & world travel
  • What The Best Job in the World has done for me
  • To sum up in a nutshell

If you want to read everything from top to bottom, read on!~

1. Los Angeles!

So immediately after finding out I wouldn’t be moving onto the next round of The Best Job in the World, I thought – Okay, must travel this summer!! The first place that came into my mind and I just knew that I had to go visit now that Australia was out of the picture? Los Angeles, California.

It kind of all came together rather nicely. My friend that I really wanted to go there with, didn’t want to go for as long as I did, but she said she could meet me down there for the last half of my trip and we could go to Las Vegas together too. Then my friend from Toronto told me that she had really wanted to go somewhere for the summer as well, and thought L.A. with me would be perfect! Along with that, for the first 4 days of my trip, I’ll be meeting up with some really great people that I’ve met online via the fansite I created for Mark Kanemura (a So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 finalist). So yeah, I’ll be with my friend from Toronto for the first portion of my L.A. trip in July, along with meeting and hanging out with “Markers“, then my Toronto friend will head back to Toronto on the same day that my friend from Edmonton comes down and we’ll head over to Las Vegas together! Perfecto!

I’ve got so much planned, so many SoCal areas to hit up and see, beaches, boulevards, boardwalks. I recently read the book “The Soloist” which is also coming out as a movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx next week, based on the real life experiences of an LA Times columnist Steve Lopez and a schizophrenic homeless musician, Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, and I absolutely want to see if I can find Nathaniel in downtown LA and hear his music!!!

Anyway, so to summarize that. I’ll be fulfilling my dream of visiting Los Angeles, my dream city, this July!!!! YAY!

2. Interships? Working? I need money to pay for my vacation!

Okay so also immediately after failing to make the next round of The Best Job in the World, I thought – okay, what am I doing in terms of my “career” this summer then? I have always been interested in television broadcasting and had intended on trying to get some kind of television station internship this summer or next, so I thought, well I could do that this summer before I go on my vacation then?

I already have a two-week internship lined up at the Edmonton Journal as part of my requirements to graduate my journalism program, which I’m stoked about. But everywhere you look there’s a hiring freeze, freelance budgets are being cut, and from what I had heard at least a month back, The Journal along with other media outlets weren’t trying too eagerly search for students to hire for paid summer internships in this gloomy recession and economy. Which is totally fair. Okay, but anyway I was interested in getting an internship (which also would have been unpaid, I’m sure, didn’t ask though) at CTV Edmonton. One reason why I’m particularly interested in CTV is because CTVglobemedia is basically, well a force across broadcasting in Canada. CTV owns Much Music, Star and E! Entertainment, MTV Canada, all of the major Canadian entertainment shows that I’m interested in working at. And I think it would have been (it still would be) valuable to be able to say I’ve worked at a CTV branch.

Needless to say, after what I thought was a really good interview (seriously, I thought it went very well!), I was told I’d be given a call after the Easter long weekend and alas, it is now Friday, Easter was several days ago, and there’s been no phone call or email. I did send a follow-up email about the internship yesterday… and yeah no response to that either, which I think means it’s safe to say I will not be working at CTV this summer. Which bums me out most definitely… and while I could try and get an internship at another TV station (Global? CityTV?), I think (again because I believe everything happens for a reason) that this was quite possibly a sign telling me “Linda!! You need to save up MONEY this summer!” which I would not have been able to do really, had I worked unpaid (though it’s always the question of what’s more important, gaining valuable career-related experience, or getting money. Hm).

Basically that leads me to this conclusion ~

I will be working evenings and weekends at my parent’s restaurant from May until I leave for my vacation in July, as a way to save up money for both my vacation and what I’m about to write about next…

3. Teaching English overseas / longterm travel!

Okay so this is a big one. I had been thinking a lot about life post-The Best Job in the World… like what I would be doing with my life, where I wanted to go, how I wanted to get there, etc., and I had come to this conclusion.

I’m basically done my journalism education. Once I complete my two-week internship by about the second week of May, I’ll be finished. Graduated. Ready to go out into the media and journalism industry and get a job and start my journalism career full-time. Back in high school when I was planning out my post-secondary route, I had planned it like this – 2 years of journalism at Grant Mac, 2 years of television broadcasting at NAIT. That way the two programs would kind of compliment eachother, and I’d have something of a 4 year education as if it were a journalism degree (even though for both it would have been journalism diploma + broadcasting diploma).

Like I’ve said numerous times in Best Job interviews, I’ve wanted to travel for a very long time. I want to go out and really see the world and experience what life has to offer, and see all I can see. About a year ago I had decided that once I finished up my schooling, a perfect way to explore the world, travel, while still gaining an income, would be to teach English overseas.

That idea came back to me this month, and I decided that I will not be going to NAIT for their broadcasting program after all. Instead, I’ll be taking some courses in the coming months to become certified in teaching English overseas. Come September (hopefully I’ll find a placement), I’ll spend 6 months to a year in first Korea, and then travel around the Asian countries once I’m there and hopefully really utilize the teaching English certification and go all over the place to stay, make a living, while exploring and seeing the world. I’ll start taking photography more seriously once I’m over there (traveling photos! foreign photos! always great subjects) and I’ll also freelance write to English publications, as well as blog and video blog about my experiences wherever I end up going.

So there it is.

4. What The Best Job In The World has done for me.

TBJITW experience has made me want to really get up and explore. Adventure. Take my life and go. I’ve been bitten by the traveling bug and now, more than ever, I don’t see myself staying in Edmonton for very long. Yes, it will always be my home, but right now I need to leave. The experience has made me really realize that, and it has made the notion of my traveling and leaving on my own, something my parents are accepting easier than they would have if I hadn’t taken part in TBJITW.

To sum up, once I get certified to teach English and get hired somewhere around the world (again, hoping it will start in Korea because I’ve been hearing great things about teaching in Korea), I plan on traveling, exploring, blogging, photographing everything I encounter, doing freelance writing, growing up really, and seeing where life takes me… before returning to the print and broadcast journalism industry here in North America. (I say North America because I have had aspirations to live and work in both Los Angeles and Toronto… and maybe after a year or two of being in a foreign country, I’ll head to one of those places to look for work instead?)

5. So, in a nutshell, this is what I need to do from now until September…

This is where I’ll be from now until September:

  • May & June: Edmonton.
  • July: Los Angeles and Las Vegas. (for sure).
  • August: Toronto (maybe).
  • September and onwards: Korea + The World (pending being hired, lol).

And here’s what I need (in a more-detailed bulleted list) to get done from now until September:

  • Complete a two-week internship with the Edmonton Journal. (Thus graduating the journalism program at MacEwan and receiving my journalism diploma).
  • Work evenings and weekends at my parent’s restaurant to save money to pay for my two-week vacation in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in July; pay for a Flip Mino HD camcorder; pay for an external flash for my Canon EOS Rebel XTI; and pay for my Global TESOL Teaching English overseas certification.
  • Take and complete my Global TESOL Teaching English overseas certification courses.
  • Research/look into teaching abroad for September. (I’m interested in Korea right now).
  • Take more photos to expand my photography portfolio/increase my experience.
  • Freelance write (and blog more extensively) to keep my writing experience fresh and current (and to help expand my portfolio).
  • Figure out how to integrate WordPress into websites and create my own WordPress themes so that I can..
  • Freelance web design / build websites and actually make some money off of it!

And there it is.

I mean, so many things can happen and different opportunities may pop up so that my route from now until September, or when I’m actually in a foreign country, you know? Who can really say where I’ll go from there? A year ago I certainly didn’t think I’d ever be participating in a global competition to try and get “the best job in the world” in Australia. And two years ago I thought that 2 years of extra education at NAIT was definitely in the cards for me. But things change. Plans change. And as I say, things happen for a reason.

I’ve got this outline of where I want my life to go now. Just like I had an outline for where I wanted my life to go two years ago. For that tentative path I came up with in my mind two years ago, I’ve for the most part stayed on it pretty closely.

If (when) I end up on the other side of the world, I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I don’t know who I’m going to meet or what opportunities will arise. I just know that I’m so excited just thinking about encountering everything that I will potentially encounter.

Basically now, at this time, my actions are revolving around these lyrics from the inspirational song I blogged about earlier this month: Brendan James – All I Can See!

Those who journey can easily understand,
the more they see the more they’ll learn,
the more that they will be.
So this I swear to you, and this I swear to me,
I’ll never rest till I’ve seen all I can see.
No, I’ll never rest till I’ve seen all i can see.

For now though, I’ve got some serious budgeting to do!!!!!

And I still need to study for my final exams for next week, lol.

What the heck does IMO mean, like SRSLY?

March 30 2009.

Lately I’ve been frequenting the ONTD Celebrity Blog on an overly-regular basis. Now one of the great things about ONTD is the users and their hilarious comments. I’ve become rather addicted to reading comments on the blog’s posts, I think in large part to the fact that they are usually witty, snarky, and are accompanied by one or several Internet slang acronyms.

I understood the basic ones, you know – LOL, WTF, ROFL, OMG, etc. But then I started seeing ones I’ve never ever seen before, ones like NGL, IDGAF, IDGI, etc. I’ve always considered myself Internet savvy and having a pretty good handle on Internet trends and what not, but here was a pile of acronyms that I had no clue the meaning of!! Was I getting too old? I’m only 19 for godsake..

Needless to say, I needed to learn what these “new” acronyms meant. What did that mean I had to do? No, not go out and buy one of those tween acronym Internet books.

What I did was enlist the help of a 15-year-old, Generation Y, really Internet savvy girl who could tell me what these strange words meant and help me compile a list of currently commonly used acronyms!

And that’s what the following is, my compilation of some current commonly used Internet slang. Compiled thanks to the assistance of the very helpful Kelly D. (with some input by a frequent ONTD-goer, Tanvi G.)

                                          Wondering WTF these letters mean?
                                                      Here’s your new guide!

TTFN – ta ta for now

LMAOSAURUS & ROFLCOPTER – variations of “lmao” and “rofl”
WEAKSAUCE & LAMESAUCE – that is weak, that is lame

You can also add “f” (eff) to many acronyms such as LMFAO & OMFG.

What some of these random slang words sound like:

Basically these days an entire sentence that is understandable to the Internet public can be written with mostly acronyms!

Examples:

LOL OMG THAT WAS SRSLY FTW LAWLS ILYSM and IAWTC NGL.
Translation: (Haha) oh my god that was seriously for the win (haha) I love you so much and I agree with this completely, not gonna lie.

JSYK IDGAF TBH that was TMI so just STFU IDC.
Translation: Just so you know I don’t give a f*ck, to be honest that was too much information so just shut the f*ck up, I don’t care.

ILU IMU LIKE SRSLY YOU’RE MY BFFL BB.
Translation:I love you, i miss you, seriously you’re my best friend for life baby.

Of course no one would actually write an entire sentence with strictly acronyms (well I hope not anyway).

When I asked my dear 15-year-old friend (who is actually quite an intelligent individual, as are many of the individuals who post comments on ONTD using tons of acronyms) why she types in acronyms and purposely spells words incorrectly, she responded with this:

I JUST LIKE TO LEAVE VOWELS OUT GOD IDK WHY COZ ITS QT!

Hahaha! Of course, I’m really not judging because I like to use acronyms and spell things wrong on purpose in chats and messages as well. This post was just something I thought would be a helpful reference for myself and whoever else happens to google “What the heck does IMO mean?!!?” and more. :D

Let me know if there are any popular acronyms that you’ve seen being used around the interwebz that you think I should add to this list! ;)

Also, only a few more days until the Top 10 of the Best Job in the World is announced! I’m becoming so very, very nervous. If TQ (Tourism Queensland) is going for geographical diversity with their Top 10 selections, than my chances are seriously shot because there’s so many candidates from Canada and all of us are could make it but they can’t choose a large number of us if they’re trying to maintain worldwide interest. Sigh! :( I’m trying to stay positive and crossing my fingers, praying, and all that good stuff though. Hopefully Thursday is a happy, happy day!
